Encompass began in 1919 as a non-profit organization. When husbands didn't come home from the First World War and women were left to fend for themselves and their families, the Catholic Women's Club opened the first nursery under the name of Green Bay Day Nursery. That name remained for 72 years - until 1991. In 1991 the name changed to Encompass Child Care, and in 2006 it was again changed to Encompass Early Education and Care. Each name change better identified the evolution that took place.
In 1925, Encompass became a charter member of the Red Feather Agency, the forerunner of United Way. Today United Way continues to support the sliding fee scale at the agency. In 1950 Service League of Green Bay took over the sponsorship. 1969-1992 saw unprecedented growth - seven additional child care centers opened and 16 new programs were launched.
Today Encompass offers support to families and high quality comprehensive services for over 800 children each day. All eight state licensed child care facilities are nationally accredited (or are in the process) by NAEYC, the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Only 8% of child care centers nationally achieve this distinction. Encompass is a community based organization that is committed to its mission of quality, compassion and advocacy.
